White Fillings
Process
The dental filling is set by your dentist, applying composite layers over the affected tooth. Then using a curing light, each layer is hardened in place. The process will not only create a protective layer over your tooth but will give it a more natural appearance. Lastly, your dentist will polish the tooth to help prevent wear or staining as well as protect the tooth from bacteria.
Price
The price can vary depending upon a number of factors, like your dentist, insurance, and severity of the tooth. Typically, the white filling will cost twice the price of a silver filling. Depending upon where the tooth is located in your mouth, many patients may find it worth the cost, allowing them to discretely protect their tooth or improve its appearance with a more natural look.
Benefits
Dental filings, in general, can protect the tooth from bacteria, tooth decay, or even cracks. However, white fillings can also do all that with the additional benefit of giving your tooth a completely natural appearance. If you are dealing with a tooth that is towards the front of the mouth, this can be especially favorable.
Disadvantages
There are a few caveats patients may have to deal with after receiving a white filling. For example, increased sensitivity may be a symptom post procedure. Patients may also realize their filling and remaining natural teeth react differently to stains, one absorbing more of the stain than the other. In order to help reduce these symptoms, it is best to try and practice good oral hygiene habits to ensure the affected tooth and surrounding teeth stay healthy.
