A tooth extraction is a procedure in which your dentist removes a tooth, typically for health reasons. There are a number of reasons one may need a tooth extracted, everything from a rotting or decayed tooth to needing your wisdom teeth removed. This procedure can sound a bit intimidating, but rest assured it is a routine procedure that dentists are well equipped to perform.
Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are molars that grow in the very back of your jaw. They typically come in during the teen years and need to be removed fairly early. Wisdom teeth are removed for health reasons because most jaws do not have enough space to fit all of our teeth plus wisdom teeth. If we were to let them grow in and there isn’t enough room in the jaw, our teeth would fall out of alignment. This could grow into more a serious issue like tooth decay, speech impediments, or problems simply biting down.
In some rare cases, patients do not need their wisdom teeth removed, either because their mouth allows for enough room or they never grow in! If you have yet to have your wisdom teeth extracted, be on the lookout and attend your regularly scheduled dental check-ups. Your dentist will be able to check if your wisdom teeth are about to grow in or in the process of doing so and may require extraction.
Prevent Future Tooth Extractions
A tooth extraction may be required if your tooth is rotting or you are dealing with an oral disease. One way to reduce your chances of ending up in this situation is by practicing good oral health. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once per day, attending regular dental exams, and eating a healthy diet. This will help promote healthy and strong teeth and help you avoid serious dental issues.
