Gum Recession
Some patients develop receding gums which can be due to genetics or lifestyle habits such as smoking. This can go unnoticed for some time, but after a certain point it can not only look poorly, but it can become problematic for the patient’s oral health. If the roots are beginning to become exposed the patient can experience particularly troublesome issues like sensitive teeth or tooth decay. If you notice your gums are beginning to recede, be sure to contact your dentist before the problem becomes worse.
Types of Grafts
Free Gingival Grafts: This graft is typically for those who have thin gums or need them enlarged for any other reason. A small section of tissue is removed from the roof of a patients mouth and placed properly along the gum line to help create a fuller appearance in the gums.
Connective-Tissue Grafts: This method is very similar to the free gingival graft in that a flap of skin is removed from the roof of the patient’s mouth, where it is then stitched into the gum area being treated.
Pedicle Grafts: This graft is performed for those who do have plenty of gums near the tooth but maybe it needs reshaping or shifting. Often times, in this instance, some of the gum is removed from the area around the tooth then it is brought to the area being treated, by either pulling the gum down or over to cover the exposed space.
