Orthodontics

Having teeth that are out of alignment can hinder a person’s self-confidence. This can be especially challenging for an adult. Fortunately, there are alignment options that provide many benefits to the patient. Having well-aligned teeth improve the patient’s quality of life and includes the ability to practice better oral hygiene, improve speech, and acquire a more aesthetic smile.

Common Conditions Treated Through Orthodontics

  • Overbite – upper teeth are further forward than the lower teeth.
  • Underbite – lower teeth are further forward than the upper teeth.
  • Overcrowding – occurs when there is insufficient space for the normal growth and development of adult teeth.
  • Aesthetic problems – Even a single misalignment can flaw the aesthetics of a person’s smile.

Dr. Goth will perform a visual examination, panoramic X-rays, and study models (bite impressions) to assess the exact nature of the misalignment issue.

When a diagnosis has been made, there are a variety of orthodontic treatment options available:

Metal or Ceramic Braces – A metal or ceramic dental base is glued to every tooth, and a dental wire is inserted through every base. The dentist will, little by little, train the teeth into correct alignment by adjusting the wire during each visit. When the specified results are achieved, the mounted dental braces are fully removed.

Braces for Children

Many children are ambivalent about getting braces. Some may like the idea of perfect teeth but are nervous about wearing braces, and whether or not they will cause them pain and discomfort. The good news is that the placement of metal braces is not painful and is often a more effective means of teeth straightening, depending on the severity of the misalignment. Above all else, the end result will be a beautiful straight smile.

Once the initial adjustment period has elapsed, those who wear braces will become used to the way they feel in the mouth. Depending on the severity of their misalignment, children are able to wear braces as early as age 7.

Braces for Adults

Orthodontic braces were traditionally recommended to teenagers with misalignment issues. Today, it has become increasingly popular for adults to wear braces to straighten their teeth and correct malocclusions (bad bites).

Traditional braces are a precise, versatile, and effective method to correct teeth misalignment. Braces work in the same manner for each patient, regardless of their age. However, patients who are still experiencing jaw growth, the treatment time is reduced significantly.

Having straight teeth can offer a variety of health and dental benefits including the following:

  • Reduction in general tooth decay
  • Decreased likelihood of developing periodontal disease
  • Decreased likelihood of tooth injury
  • Reduction in digestive disorders
  • Improved ability to practice good oral hygiene
